Fan Art: Aphrodite, Hera and Eros

Some fun fan art I received (from Clio, daughter of First Second editorial director Mark Siegel). Her dad's a super-talented artist, and at six years old I'd say she's well on track to surpassing her father (and me, for that matter), wouldn't you say?

Fan Art Forum! Persephone in living color, with update

It's been awhile since I ran one of these, but that's because it's been awhile since somebody sent me something ;)

Jakob Dailes has previously been featured on this site in a mythophile profile, and runs his own site the Classical Club. Recently, on the BRAND SPANKING NEW OLYMPIANS RULE FORUM Jakob posted the below image of Persephone, drawn by yours truly for Olympians Book 4, Hades, that he had colored in.

So what do you think? To the best of my knowledge, I haven't posted any color versions of what Persephone will look like yet (with the exception of the cover, which has changed A LOT). UPDATED: Here's a link to my finished colors So how close did he come to my version? Some things are the same, a few things are different, but all in all-- pretty darn cool.

Fan Art Forum! A Cyclopean Horde!

Recently I visited my good friends at PS 63 and the Neighborhood School in NYC. I shared some of my drawing secrets with the kids there and this is what they did:




Oh, gods! Run! It's a mob of Cyclopes! Electric Cyclopes, fanged Cyclopes, winged Cyclopes, horned Cyclopes, robo-Cyclopes, armored Cyclopes, Cyclopes with eye-beams, Cyclopes with hand grenades! RUN!



Oh, but wait! We have an army of Athenas to defend us! Sure, she's outnumbered, but she is a warrior goddess. I suppose we're in good hands. In fact, I feel pretty bad for that one lonely Cyclops sharing the page with all these Athenas. Good thing it has wings ;)

Fan Art Forum! Cyclops!

I recently did an appearance at the library at East Elmhurst in Queens where I showed the kids how to draw some of the characters in Zeus and Athena. This terrific drawing of a cyclops comes from Ovidio, who finished it up after I left and asked the librarian to send it to me. Great job, Ovidio! By the way, I don't know if Ovidio knows this, but he was made for mythology. He shares a name with Ovid, the famous Roman writer who gave us the Metamorphoses, one of the most famous ancient sources we have of Greek myths. A lot of what happens in my newest book, Athena: Grey-Eyed Goddess, comes from sources provided by Ovid.

Starting us off is this wonderful piece by JP. JP is almost 13 years old, and is a huge Percy Jackson fan (me too!). He's been taking art lessons since he was 4 and wants to be a comics artist when he grows up (also me too!). Previously JP was awarded "Demigod of the Week" status at Rick Riordan's blog for this awesome drawing of Percy Jackson.

Here's JP in his own words talking about his choice for the Fan Art Forum:

"My drawing is of Odysseus, son of Laertiades, prince of Ithica. He is by far my favorite mythological person! Thank you so much for the opportunity to do this!"
