Blast from the Past! Really old Olympians sketches found!
I was going through some old watercolor pads the other day and came across this page of really old, proto-Olympian sketches-- I think these actually predate my current concept of the series and date back to an earlier idea that thankfully never got past my drawing board. Some of the characters look pretty close to their eventual Olympians, some do not, and almost all are kind of embarrassing in their crumminess. Can you figure out who's who?

From left to right - Zeus, Athena, Hades?, Hera, Poseidon, Ares, Hephaestus, Apollo?, Hermes, Dionysus?
ReplyDeleteWait I forgot Aphrodite, She is between Hephaestus and Apollo?
ReplyDeleteGood guesses, Anonymous. You left out the woman between Apollo and Hermes, and I'm thinking that the guy you identified as Hades is actually a helmetless Ares. I could be wrong though, I drew this so ling ago I can't honestly recall.
ReplyDeleteling= long, btw. Oy...
ReplyDeleteBetween Apollo and Hermes would be Artemis? I always wonder what Ares would look like without his helmet.
ReplyDeleteYou're right about Artemis.
ReplyDeleteI'll tell you this-- when you see Ares without his helmet in Olympians, he won't be looking much like that. In fact, now that I think about it, I believe you have seen a helmetless Ares in Athena: Grey Eyed Goddess.
where's auntie Demeter? haha!
ReplyDeleteRight? Poor Demeter always seems to get the shaft when it comes to modern depictions of the Olympians. I'm embarrassed that I was part of the problem at this early juncture of the project. Hestia (the other Olympian most often dissed) is also notably missing.
ReplyDeleteI like the way Apollon looks in this one. He seems somehow more youthful than he does in his profile.
ReplyDeleteYeah, he does at that. Maybe I'll adapt some of this drawing to his design when I tell the adventures of young Apollo in his own book.
